Steering Wheel or Steering Column is Loose

The steering wheel or the steering column feels loose while driving the reason is because the steering shaft or steering column components is loose. Other reason is due to loose universal joint.

Possible Cause of Steering Wheel or Steering Column Looseness

Loose Steering Shaft or Steering Column Components

If the steering wheel or the steering column feels loose while driving the car then the most likely cause of the problem is a loose component of the steering shaft or the steering column.

The steering wheel is connected to the steering shaft that is also connected with a universal joint into the steering gear. Also the steering column is the one that house the steering shaft which is secured by steering column bracket. Usually the steering column bracket is the one that is loose. If the bracket is loose the steering column and the steering wheel will be able to move thus the driver will feel looseness on the steering wheel or the steering column.

Another possibility is that the steering column bracket is not loose but rather the universal joint. If the universal joint is loose it will move and the movement will then be transferred to the steering column up to the steering wheel, making the steering wheel feels like loose while driving.

Bring the car to a repair shop and ask the mechanic to check the various components of the steering shaft and the steering column. Usually it’s the steering column bracket. If this is the cause of the problem then it can easily be corrected with a minimal cost. Take care of this problem soon because it is not safe to drive the car with a loose steering wheel or steering column components.
