Possible Cause of Steering Wheel or Steering Column Looseness
Loose Steering Shaft or Steering Column ComponentsIf the steering wheel or the steering column feels loose while driving the car then the most likely cause of the problem is a loose component of the steering shaft or the steering column.
The steering wheel is connected to the steering shaft that is also connected with a universal joint into the steering gear. Also the steering column is the one that house the steering shaft which is secured by steering column bracket. Usually the steering column bracket is the one that is loose. If the bracket is loose the steering column and the steering wheel will be able to move thus the driver will feel looseness on the steering wheel or the steering column.
Another possibility is that the steering column bracket is not loose but rather the universal joint. If the universal joint is loose it will move and the movement will then be transferred to the steering column up to the steering wheel, making the steering wheel feels like loose while driving.
