Cause of clunking sound in the front end when braking
(1) There is a loose component on the front suspension that produces the clunking noise.
Usually, this is a case of loose components coming from the front end, this kind of problem happens because when the car is moving and when the driver steps on the brake pedal, all the weights of the car will be thrown forward into the front end. All of the weight that is thrown coming from the rear end will be absorbed by the front suspension including all of the components of the suspension.
Now imagine when there is a loose component on the front suspension, because of all the weight that is thrown unto the suspension it will create a noise which the driver can easily hear every time the driver steps on the brake pedal to stop the car from running, the noise created is the clunking noise that usually heard coming from the front end only when braking.

Since this is not an ordinary problem a skilled mechanic should be the one to look into the problem, bring the car to a reputable car shop that specializes in front suspensions job. Ask the mechanic to check the front suspension, also include checking the ball joint. The mechanic will look for any loose components on the front suspension that produces the clunking noise.
Once the problem is identified, check if the components can be repaired or not, repair or replace if necessary. Usually, it only needs to be re-tightened.
